Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens, better known as Queen Latifah in the US, is a performer and actress. Her work as Queen Latifah in television, film as well as music has earned her several awards. They include the Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award Six additional Grammy Nominations An Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah's parents were Lancelot and Rita Owens, both Police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher, who worked at Irvington High School. The couple divorced in the year Latifah was ten. Latifah lived in the Baptist faith and attended Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. The stage name Latifah which means delicate and gentle in Arabic was bestowed to her by her aunt when she was just eight years old. Latifah was always tall and tall. Standing 5'10", she was the center forward on her high school basketball team. She performed the number Home from the show The Wiz in a high school performance. Latifah started beatboxing for the rap group Ladies Fresh. Latifah was among the members of the original version of the Flavor Unit which at that time was a crew of MCs who were grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, recorded a version of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. The recording was handed over to Yo! MTV Raps The Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the track and signed Latifah in 1988, to drop her debut single Wrath of My Madness.
